Frequently Asked Questions

  • I found a dog! Can you help?

Our rescue's focus is on helping the dogs who need us most, so our main focus is on dogs in our local city shelters. We are not currently intaking owner surrenders directly or found animals. The exceptions to this include major medical cases. Click here to fill out an intake request form only if this is a major medical concern.

As a foster-based rescue, we can only take dogs that we have open foster homes for. We will get back to you as soon as we can if we are able to help. Please note that we receive 20+ requests a day, so we are unable to respond to every request for intake.

  • What are the basic requirements to adopt a dog?

All pets in the home must be up to date on vaccines and spayed/neutered (medical exceptions must be communicated). We require an application, virtual home visit (email to adopt@caitiesfosterfam.org), personal/vet references, meet and greet, and $400 adoption fee.

  • What is the process for adopting a dog?

The steps are briefly outlined below:

    • Potential adopters are required to submit an adoption application and be approved before they can physically meet a foster dog.

    • Suitable applicants may be contacted for additional screening.

    • Once approved, meet and greets with the foster dog and foster parents will be scheduled with qualified applicants.

    • The adopter pays adoption fees and signs an adoption contract.  Foster dogs cannot go to a potential adopter’s home until the fee and contract are received.  Foster dog then goes to its new forever home.

  • Does an adopter have to be in the Houston area?

No. We do allow out of state adoptions on a case by case basis. There is no guarantee, but being out of Houston is not an immediate no. We currently have the ability to transport dogs to Chicago, NY, and Boston at a $250 fee. All other out of state are expected to provide transport themselves.

  • How much does it cost to adopt?

The adoption fee for all dogs is $400 and for all cats is $300 (or $400 for bonded pair) and covers all vetting up to the point of adoption, vaccines up to date, microchip, and spay/neuter.

  • How much does it cost to foster? (Spoiler: NOTHING!)

Nothing! It is FREE! We provide all necessary supplies and cover all medical bills (must be arranged through us). Fosters should be able to pick up supplies in Seabrook, TX, and attend vet appointments around the Houston area.

  • How long are dogs in foster homes?

It completely depends on the dog and the situation.  The average stay in a foster home is about 2 months.  However, most puppies and some dogs with great photos and stories on the web may stay only a few weeks.  Others, recovering from an injury, certain breeds and senior dogs, may stay much longer.

  • Can I adopt my foster dog or cat?

Yes! As long as the foster meets all requirements needed for the dog/cat long-term, the foster has first choice to adopt their foster dog. However, the foster needs to let a board member know within 10 calendar days of receiving their foster if they are going to adopt.

  • How do I pick a foster dog? Or what if I have a certain question about a foster?

Once you are approved as a foster, you will be added to a private Facebook group of approved foster and volunteers. Here we post foster needs, answer questions, etc.

  • Do I need to have prior medical knowledge or expertise to foster?

No, but you may be asked to dispense medicine to your foster dog so you will have to be comfortable following veterinarian’s instructions if fostering a sick or injured dog.

  • I can't foster, but I want to help. What can I do?

We are always looking for volunteers to help with many roles! We need help with Houston transports around town (short drives from foster to vet, etc.), online remote volunteers, event volunteers, and more! Please check out our "Get Involved" Page to apply to volunteer with us.

  • Can I surrender a dog to you?

Our rescue's focus is on helping the dogs who need us most, so our main focus is on dogs in our local city shelters. We are not currently intaking owner surrenders directly or found animals. The exceptions to this include major medical cases. Click here to fill out an intake request form only if this is a major medical concern.

  • How can I meet dog(s) or cat(s)?

As a foster-based rescue, we do not have a physical location open to the public. We have occassional adoption events in person (see social media for these dates). Other than adoption events, all meet and greets are scheduled for approved adopters only. So, the first step to meeting a dog or cat is to fill out an adoption application.
